Chapter 114 This Is the Ancestor of Brother Ye’s Family
Within less than a week of military training, many in the School of Economics and Management had already heard the news: among this year's freshmen, there was an exceptionally beautiful girl who had just been admitted.
Afternoons were generally light on classes, and from time to time, students who had finished would ride their bikes past the edge of the sports field.
During those days, Li Hui noticed that the class he was leading had become the most eye-catching presence on the entire field. Some students even went so far as to quietly approach him, trying to find out Lu Qingyue's name.
One boy in Li Hui's own class took things a step further, coming to the field every day and taking advantage of their rest breaks to pull Li Hui aside and ask,
"Who's that girl, first from the left in the fourth row?"
Li Hui immediately recognized the telltale signs of another suitor and sighed quietly.
"I advise you not to get any ideas about her," he warned. Otherwise, you might not last long at this school. He left the rest unsaid, thinking a hint would be enough.
But the boy misunderstood, raising his eyebrows in surprise. "Is she your girlfriend?"
If she was his buddy's girlfriend, he wouldn't dare pursue her.
The word "girlfriend" made Li Hui's scalp tingle, and he quickly denied it.
"As if I'd be that lucky! She's the precious one from Ye-ge's family!"
The boy clearly knew the legendary Cheng Xingye, too. His eyes widened in shock.
"Ye-ge? No way! A guy like him would fall for a newly graduated freshman girl?"
After years at the same school as Cheng Xingye, with the forums awash in stories about him, the boy had never heard of him getting close to any girl, let alone having an official girlfriend.
Seeing his dumbfounded look, Li Hui clapped him on the shoulder, giving him a meaningful glance.
"Why not? Did you see that car by the campus road? It's been there for three days—three days! I feel like I've got a surveillance camera strapped to me. I can't even fart in peace!"
A row of plane trees lined the edge of the field, their dense shade a cool respite from the scorching sun. Few people passed by.
The boy looked where he was directed and indeed saw a sleek black coupe parked beneath the trees.
Freshmen and sophomores might not recognize it, but as seniors, they all knew—that was the car of their former student council president.
Realizing she was already spoken for, and by someone formidable at that, the boy wisely decided not to pursue Lu Qingyue any further. He smiled at Li Hui, awkwardly exchanged a few words, and left.
Li Hui heaved a sigh of relief after sending him off and was about to gather his class when he suddenly noticed the car flash its hazard lights twice.
Quick-witted and perceptive, Li Hui immediately understood that the upperclassman was summoning him. Without another thought for his group of rookie cadets, he dashed off toward the shade.
Dappled sunlight danced across the car's surface as the door swung open and a long leg stepped out.
The man emerging wore a white shirt and tailored trousers, and, somewhat unexpectedly, a pair of refined silver-rimmed glasses.
As he stepped out, Cheng Xingye cast a lingering glance at the little darling seated in the shade, only then turning his attention to Li Hui.
"Li Hui."
"Yes, sir?" Li Hui responded immediately. "Brother, what can I do for you?"
Beneath the trees, the former student council president casually removed his silver-rimmed glasses, the lenses catching the light as he offered a polite smile.
"My little troublemaker hasn't caused you any issues, has she?"
The words instantly put Li Hui at ease. No wonder this man could rise to the top—he knew exactly how to strike the right note, expressing care for his own sweetheart while giving the instructor due respect.
Li Hui grinned and hurried to flatter, "With all due respect, anything she does is a blessing for me, not a problem at all!"
Cheng Xingye shot him a glance and gave a noncommittal hum, lowering his head to polish his glasses as he said offhandedly, "If she does act up, deal with it however you see fit. Don't worry about saving face for me."
It was all said with perfect decorum, strictly businesslike.
Li Hui, thoroughly taken in, double-checked, half-believing, "Really? No need to go easy?"
Cheng Xingye paused his cleaning and slowly raised his head.
He was exceptionally tall. Even with Li Hui's own height of 1.8 meters, he still had to look up just slightly.
Catching the faint narrowing of the man's eyes, Li Hui instinctively blurted out, his heart skipping a beat, "Of course I'd never embarrass you! Just joking, haha!"
He forced a nervous laugh, then cautiously looked up to gauge Cheng Xingye's expression.
The other man's face seemed unchanged. He merely lowered his gaze to continue wiping the glasses, though his tone softened a little as he spoke again.
"I'm not one to play favorites. Don't let it weigh on you. Just don't make her cry, that's all."
Li Hui thought to himself, If only you knew.
His nerves were so frayed by now that he was on the verge of collapse.
But before his old boss, Li Hui thumped his chest and swore, "I'll make sure she never sheds a tear!"
With that reassurance, Cheng Xingye finally put his glasses back on.
The sharpness in his gaze was now shielded by the lenses, and for a moment, Li Hui felt as though the very air around them had begun to flow freely again.
A gentle tap landed on his shoulder, and a calm voice spoke, "That's all. You can get back to work."
Li Hui snapped back to reality, quickly responding with a respectful "Yes, sir," and watched as this king of the underworld strode off the field.
...
There was a saying at university: those with 8 a.m. classes are soulless.
Even someone as gifted as Cheng Xingye looked weary and spent as he sat in an early morning lecture.
For graduate students, the morning meant two back-to-back sessions on medical technology literature, running until ten.
Cheng Xingye half-listened to the elderly professor's rambling, idly twirling a pen between his fingers. His long legs, unable to stretch out beneath the cramped desk, sprawled loosely to either side.
At 9:10 a.m., the bell rang to signal the end of the first period.
Cheng Xingye was about to step outside for a breath of fresh air when he felt his phone vibrating in his pocket.
He pulled it out to see Li Hui's name on the screen.
Sensing this couldn't be good, he answered immediately.
The moment the call connected, Li Hui's stammering voice came through.
"Brother, your girl, she..."
Someone passed by in the corridor and greeted Cheng Xingye. He nodded in reply, then moved to the stairwell, his voice low. "You made her cry?"
On the other end, Li Hui hastily denied it. "No way! She's fine!"
Cheng Xingye exhaled in relief, tapping his fingers lightly on the stair rail, his tone casual and puzzled. "Then why are you calling me?"
Li Hui's voice was so guilty it was almost tearful; Cheng Xingye could practically see his long, drawn face through the phone.
"It's just... your girl made someone else cry."
Cheng Xingye: "???"
Cheng Xingye: "....."
