On the first floor of the hospital, there was an emergency center. Inside, a small room reserved for nurses served to treat urgent wounds for trauma patients. Xiaoyu’s injury was minor—almost negligible, really. A simple disinfecting would suffice, and as long as she took care to avoid infection, no scar would remain.

Two young nurses were already inside. When Han Xuemie entered with three men in tow, both girls looked taken aback. Yet as soon as their gaze landed on Xiaoyu’s face, their eyes became transfixed, shimmering with starry admiration.

“How can someone be so beautiful?” It was the first time Li Huan ever heard women describe a man as “beautiful,” and seeing the two girls clutching their hearts in adoration, he sighed inwardly. Wherever Xiaoyu appeared, he would always be the center of attention for women.

“Oh dear, what happened to your face? My heart aches for you…”
“Did they bully you? Was it him? Or him?” A chubby, adorable nurse shot a suspicious glance at Li Huan—he didn’t seem the type—then turned to Li Gang, her tone changing to one of certainty, as if her eyes could burn holes right through him.

Li Gang felt uneasy under their sharp scrutiny, scratching his head awkwardly. “It’s a misunderstanding! We’re good friends!”

“Hmph!” Both nurses snorted in unison, clearly unconvinced.

Han Xuemie stood by, a little stunned. She never expected a scene like this; normally, her two colleagues were shy and reserved, but in the presence of a handsome man, their true colors burst forth.

Xiaoyu was innocently pulled onto a rest bed, where the two nurses vied to be the first to apply medicine to his cheeks, rubbing them again and again. Their tender care was almost overwhelming, even for Li Huan.

“Don’t touch my chest!” Xiaoyu cried out, quickly hugging himself to block a certain area.

“We’re just checking if you have chest muscles!”
“Yeah! Your skin is so smooth, I want to take a bite!”
“…”

As Xiaoyu fled, the two nurses’ eyes grew red with urgency, nearly ready to cry. Such a rare, handsome man—if they couldn’t claim him, at least they wanted a little more advantage.

Watching the scene, Li Huan felt a twinge of jealousy. Xiaoyu was born with a face that attracted all sorts of attention—life was so unfair!

“Mimi, do you know that guy?” The tall nurse, looking forlorn as Xiaoyu left, turned to Han Xuemie.

“Yes, but we’re not very close,” Han Xuemie replied, puzzled—she thought the girl was interested in Xiaoyu.

“That’s good! Help me out—go ask for his phone number!” The tall girl grinned, tugging at Han Xuemie’s wrist, trying to look adorable.

“You like him?” Han Xuemie couldn’t understand; the girl seemed interested in Xiaoyu a moment ago.

“No, it’s called an indirect tactic! Aren’t they friends? If we invite all three out, I’ll get to see our little heartthrob!” The tall nurse finally revealed her true motive.

“Oh, so that’s it!”

“Help me, and I’ll give you all my braised chicken legs this week—your favorite!” The tall girl made a face of reluctant generosity, looking truly pitiable.

“Yes! And you can have my pumpkin porridge!” The chubby nurse quickly upped the ante.

Han Xuemie furrowed her brows, pondering for a while. It seemed she couldn’t resist the lure of good food, so she finally nodded. “You have to keep your promise, or I won’t help either of you!”

“Mm!” Both girls jumped at her, planting a kiss on her cheek.

Seeing their wolfish enthusiasm, Han Xuemie herself retreated, and when she reached the entrance, she saw Li Huan about to hail a taxi and hurried over.

“Hey, wait!” Han Xuemie didn’t know Li Huan’s name yet, so she simply called out.

Li Huan heard the familiar voice and turned, surprised to see Han Xuemie chasing from the hospital. “Is there something you need?”

“I don’t know your name yet,” Han Xuemie said, her eyes circling as she feigned sadness.

“He’s Little Huanhuan!” Xiaoyu, already in the taxi, poked his head out and called.

“Don’t listen to him. Just call me Li Huan,” Li Huan protested, pushing Xiaoyu’s head back inside.

“Li Huan! Huanhuan? That’s odd—can boys be called Huanhuan?” Han Xuemie suddenly recalled the girl from that night, who seemed to have the same nickname.

“My phone’s out of battery. Can I use yours for a moment?” Han Xuemie, unsure how to ask for a guy’s number, suddenly thought of a clever idea.

Li Huan was surprised; if her phone was dead, the other nurses surely had theirs—how could all three be out of battery? But he didn’t bother to question it and handed over his phone.

Han Xuemie giggled, dialed her own number, and before long, her pocket phone rang. She took it out, waved it before Li Huan, stuck out her tongue, and said, “Oops, I forgot there’s still some power left—sorry!”

With that, Han Xuemie turned and dashed away, soon vanishing into the hospital lobby, leaving Li Huan standing there bewildered, wondering what game she was playing.

The three left the hospital and went to Li Gang’s rented apartment. Along the way, Xiaoyu received a call from Pei Yao, turning pale as he reluctantly gave Li Gang’s address.

Pei Yao soon arrived, and upon seeing the injury on Xiaoyu’s face, jealousy flared. She pushed Xiaoyu onto the sofa and demanded, “Tell me, what happened to your face? Did you mess around with some woman and get scratched?”

Li Huan and Li Gang wisely kept silent. Pei Yao, for all her refined appearance, was fierce at heart—no wonder Xiaoyu was so scared of her, though there was a hint of dependence in his fear.

“I didn’t mess around! Those women are so annoying!” Xiaoyu whimpered under Pei Yao, tears welling in his eyes, nearly ready to cry.

Pei Yao seemed to trust Xiaoyu. Hearing his words, she let him go, gently touching his face. “So what happened?”

Xiaoyu recounted Li Gang’s story to Pei Yao. When she heard about Yu Mei sending people to block them, she was furious, nearly cursing out loud. The three men in the room remained silent, hardly daring to breathe.

Pei Yao was fiery, but she had a way with people. At first, she’d seemed adorably domineering, but now her true temper showed. Li Huan imagined a scene: Xiaoyu tied up on the bed, Pei Yao holding a candle in one hand and a whip in the other, grinning mischievously…

Pei Yao came from a wealthy family and promised to help Li Gang investigate. If her father knew the right people, Li Gang could recover his fifty thousand yuan. But she wasn’t sure if her father had any connections with petty thieves or scammers, so she couldn’t guarantee anything.

Li Gang had already given up hope of getting his money back, so he didn’t care much. Since Pei Yao had made the offer, he couldn’t refuse and simply owed her a favor.

It wasn’t until lunchtime that Xiaoyu and Pei Yao emerged from Li Gang’s room. Whatever they’d been doing inside, Pei Yao was unconcerned, but Xiaoyu’s face was flushed with embarrassment, his neck bearing the traces of kisses—clearly, something intimate had occurred.

Li Huan truly envied Xiaoyu for having such a domineering yet gentle girlfriend. He could only blame his mother for not making him as alluring. But then he remembered Su Dieyi at home and felt content. To have such a girl as a girlfriend or wife was every man’s dream.

The following days passed peacefully. The swindlers who had cheated Li Gang didn’t show up again, and later they learned it was Pei Yao who’d had her father pull strings and send a message, so the trouble ceased. By Saturday morning, Li Gang arranged a meeting, and Li Huan accompanied him to retrieve his fifty thousand yuan, thus ending the matter.

Li Gang learned a lot from the experience. Though he still mentioned Yu Mei from time to time, his tone now carried a gentle sadness—he seemed to have truly let go. The only thing that irked him was losing his virginity in such a ridiculous way.

Often, when all the troubles entangling one’s life suddenly disappear, one begins to ponder the meaning of existence. Boring days seem to crawl by slowly yet fly by quickly: when you feel it’s still yesterday, perhaps dawn has already passed; as sunlight spills gold across the sky, a new day begins, the dull routine repeats, and restlessness stirs within the heart.

Thankfully, Li Huan’s life, though monotonous, was sweet. Each day he could ride the bus to school with the beautiful Su Dieyi, then return home together to cook and watch TV. It felt as though he had a home of his own. Of course, apart from the occasional hint of flirtation from Li Huan, promptly dismissed by Su Dieyi, nothing substantial progressed between them. In fact, Li Huan had never even entered Su Dieyi’s room.
