[Mr. Hans, calling in]

At last, the other end seemed unable to endure Lin Yue’s persistent calling, and the phone clicked as the call connected.

“Mr. Hans, finally done with your work?”

Lin Yue bit back the sharp pain.

He dared not imagine how much blood he would have lost if his original arm had been severed. Fortunately, the artificial blood vessels at the cut had automatically constricted, sparing him from dying on the spot.

Thanks to technology, he could still walk a bit.

“Not bad. You have quite the skill! Friend… with your ability, you’re well-suited to make a name for yourself here. But Hansen needs you all to keep quiet about this shipment. I hope you understand.” Mr. Hans applauded lightly, his expression casual as if none of this concerned him.

Fine! Like to play it that way?

Lin Yue felt he had been far too generous to Hans.

“I understand your f***ing meaning!” Lin Yue clenched his teeth against the pain. “Wade Blick. Do you really think no one knows about this?”

Mr. Hans, usually composed to the extreme, was silent for the first time.

“Now you must be curious how I found out your real name, this company lackey of yours, right?”

Lin Yue’s smile was ruthless.

It really was as the saying went: he was the lion eyeing this wild bull named Hans.

In his previous life, Lin Yue had a clear grasp of the main characters in this game’s storyline. He hadn’t wanted to treat this middleman harshly, but some people just wouldn't stop messing with you unless slapped.

He had planned to develop slowly in this small town, gradually exploring this world… but now, legends and rewards aside, Lin Yue—missing an arm—only wanted to survive.

Over the holo-phone, Mr. Hans’s breathing grew noticeably heavy.

He couldn’t understand how all this, long buried in the dust, was known by the young man before him.

Hans’s weakness had never been known to anyone else.

Now he feared this bloodied, bright-eyed, stubborn youth.

But Lin Yue was not one to stop after one blow; he intended to dismantle Hans piece by piece.

So he continued:

“You’re a senior exec at Petrochem, climbing high. Want me to tell Hansen there’s a disguised company dog lying right in his own nest? Hmm?”

“You’re hoping to rake in a pension on Pacific Continent, even start a family—wishing for a peaceful retirement in this world…”

“Are you prepared for what that really means?”

Hans finally darkened his expression. He’d jokingly called this young man “lion” before, but now the stone he’d raised had landed hard on his own foot.

He wasn’t going to sit back and die quietly:

“Kid, the past means nothing. You threaten me—do you really have the guts?”

Fine, gutsy enough!

Lin Yue thought this middleman had been a fool to think he could have an equal dialogue with him, a real give-and-take.

Page 2/3

Mr. Hans was a middleman backed by a company, Hansen’s lapdog, dealing in dirty business. Those respectful called him a powerful influencer; those not so respectful called him a turncoat.

Lin Yue’s thoughts were simple: just to earn some money and survive—how could it be so hard?

Seeing the other party still not giving up, Lin Yue decided to expose even more.

He continued to strip away the polished veneer of this shiny middleman.

“I seem to know you like to back two officers under Hansen’s command. Let me think... Gago? Bennett? Guess how long you think you can last in Gemstone Green Dog’s den when the Colonel finds out you’re campaigning and praying for his throat to be slit?”

“You think you can be some petty kingpin in Dog Town, right?”

“And… you’ve probably been in contact with Cuba quite a bit too, haven’t you?”

Hans’s face and mental defenses were shattered piece by piece by Lin Yue.

The scheming middleman was seen through inside and out for the first time.

“Friend, enough…”

Lin Yue was blunt, cursing and threatening:

“Who the hell is your friend?! I’m giving you two choices now. First: obediently go to Hansen and tell the Colonel what I’ve said. Let’s see how this warlord treats you.”

“Second: get out of Gemstone Green, make your position clear, seriously think about how to stop Hansen’s operation—and on top of that, figure out how to keep me alive.”

“I’ve already had your files copied several times, maybe some hackers have copies too? Anyway, these things are tied to my life. If I’m gone, expect them to go straight to Hansen.”

“How’s that? Plenty of choices, huh?”

Lin Yue’s eyes were bloodshot, but his voice remained steady, though he was near his limit.

Breath out—damn, this feels good!

For the first time, Lin Yue understood how sweet revenge tasted.

As for whether Hansen would continue as the Pacific Continent’s middleman, or what impact that might have—he didn’t care.

What difference would one less middleman make in this cruel world? Even if the storyline went haywire… what did it have to do with Lin Yue?

Hans, always composed, truly lost his cool today.

He had been completely understood.

“Calm down, friend. Tell me your location. My men will pick you up immediately. I guarantee your safety.”

Lin Yue laughed loudly. “Pick me up? Are you stupid? Find me a few routes out of Dog Town, 100,000 euros. If Hansen and your men catch me once, I’ll send your files right away.”

The money was for his prosthetics and facial reconstruction surgeries.

As for that escape route, Lin Yue didn’t plan to take it—like the so-called “files,” it was just a smokescreen.

Whoever plays it safe is just waiting to die in Night City! He not only wasn’t going to die, but had decided to stay in Dog Town and keep an eye on Hans.

At this point, this place had truly become a safe house.

Dog Town was Lin Yue’s first step forward.

Hans nodded. Sure enough, 100,000 euros transferred into Lin Yue’s account, not a cent missing.

His face darkened until it seemed water might drip off.

“Get out of Dog Town and don’t come back.”

Lin Yue grinned, blood staining his teeth. “Not necessarily. You’re mad now, thinking about how to screw me over in Night City, but I like to wander around. Maybe one day I’ll drop by for a visit. That’s all. Over and out.”

As the call ended, Lin Yue finally collapsed.

The quiet night breeze, the searing pain, the distant howls of the Phantom Hounds’ horns, the Colonel’s speeches, and the hovering cars above all assaulted his nerves.

Kneeling on the ground, Lin Yue, well prepared, contacted a prosthetics doctor he had left contact info with in the stadium’s black market. He hoped to use money to secure some accompanying service.

“Rustle, rustle.”

The dry grass stirred.

Lin Yue, barely holding his head up, was dialing, naturally hearing the approaching footsteps.

A pair of gleaming, company-lackey high-heeled shoes appeared before him, revealing slender, pale ankles beneath tailored trousers.

Not done yet?

More company lackeys? And a woman at that…

Lin Yue was truly exhausted. Summoning all his strength, he looked up at the woman standing before him.

She was quite pretty.

Lin Yue thought so.

Ah well, it was fine. Revenge was done. Before dying, he even got to see the cyber-beauty who was “executing” him... he felt at peace.

“Who are you?” he asked before his eyes rolled back and he fainted completely.

The woman looked at the fallen figure, frowning slightly. “Damn, still able to walk like this?”

She reached out; beneath her suit sleeve, the patterns of her prosthetic arm stood out. With one hand, she lifted Lin Yue up.

“Can you hear me? Stay awake.”

She lightly tapped his cheek.

Lin Yue’s consciousness blurred, but he seemed to nod.

“Damn, looks like you’re about to die.”

“Um, I’m from the Arasaki Counterintelligence Department. My name is—”

“V.”
