Chapter 13: A Single Blue-Eyed Card Worth 1.5 Billion Yen—Is That Too Much?

Kaiba addressed Jounouchi as a "mediocre talent," and judging by his expression, he wasn’t joking. This made Jounouchi somewhat angry. "So then, Seito Kaiba, the eldest son and genius of the Kaiba Group, what brings you down here?"
"I just happened to hear that there are some ultra-rare cards here, and out of curiosity, I came to check it out," Kaiba said with a smile, though his face was full of disdain for the shabby Turtle Toy Shop. "But honestly, how could such a rundown place, worse than an outhouse by a rural farm, possibly have any rare cards?"
"Really now, I guess even I have immature delusions sometimes, thinking a place like this could have decent cards," Kaiba added, shrugging helplessly with an expression that made you want to punch him.
No, Jounouchi was already ready to throw a punch. If Honda and Hayato hadn’t pulled him back in time, Kaiba might have ended up with a broken face. Even while being restrained, Jounouchi was still very agitated. "A tiger doesn’t show its might, and you take me for a sick cat? What right do you have to insult Grandpa Game’s toy shop?"
"Hmph, you think I’m like you guys?" Kaiba stepped forward, undeterred by Jounouchi’s struggle, exuding an air of arrogance. "I’m a national dueling champion. The gap between you and me is as vast as a soaring dragon and a fish at the bottom of a river—completely different levels."
Kaiba’s haughty attitude was infuriating. Hayato even considered letting Jounouchi loose to beat Kaiba senseless. What excuse could he use then? A cramp in his hand?
"Then how about a match with a lowly fish like me, Kaiba?" Jounouchi, furious, laughed bitterly and pulled out the deck he had just adjusted. "I’ve seen enough of that sour look at school. I’ve put up with you long enough!"
"Heh, my time is precious. I can tolerate searching for rare cards, but wasting it on someone like you, a mere mortal, is not worth it," Kaiba sneered and turned to leave. As he did, he unconsciously glanced around the room at the others.
The timid Yugi Mutou, the mediocre Jounouchi and his delinquent friends Honda, the plain-looking Masaki, and that one good student who was so inconspicuous no one really noticed him—none were important.
Kaiba’s gaze finally settled on the owner of the game shop—Sugoroku Mutou. The distinct height and hairstyle instantly revealed his kinship to Yugi Mutou.
Then Kaiba’s eyes moved downward—and this movement triggered a major event. Kaiba Seito found himself unable to look away, his gaze glued to the card held by Sugoroku Mutou’s white-gloved hand.

"What!? That is the ‘Blue-Eyes White Dragon’!?"
Impatiently, Kaiba disregarded the hostile glare from Jounouchi, who looked ready to fight, and shoved aside Yugi and Anzu blocking his way. He strode to the counter, leaning in as close as possible to the ‘Blue-Eyes White Dragon’ card displayed there.
"Why? Why would the legendary ‘Blue-Eyes White Dragon’ appear in a place like this? Why?!"
Jounouchi’s smugness overflowed at Kaiba’s uncharacteristic loss of composure. "Hmph, Kaiba, what kind of crappy cards do you think a place like this could have? How do you feel now? You don’t even respect the ‘Blue-Eyes White Dragon’."
But Kaiba seemed deaf to Jounouchi’s words, lost in shock. ‘To find the ‘Blue-Eyes White Dragon’ here, it’s unbelievable. I must have it, I absolutely must!’
"Alright, alright, you’ve had enough of the show," Sugoroku seemed to see through Kaiba’s yearning and quickly put the card back in its box, closing it as if unwilling to continue the display. "Hey, are you the Kaiba kid? This card isn’t for sale."
"Damn old man," Kaiba thought irritably as Sugoroku had already seen through his intentions before he could speak. But the elite education Kaiba received since childhood kept him from showing his anger openly. Instead, he calmly placed the aluminum case he was carrying on the table.
*Thud!*
Sugoroku was startled by the dull sound of the case hitting the glass counter. Since the counter was glass to better display the cards inside, he worried Kaiba’s strength might accidentally break it.
Kaiba paid no mind to Sugoroku’s expression, opened the case, and turned it around to show him its contents. "Kisama, please, sell me that ‘Blue-Eyes White Dragon.’ I can trade you these cards!"
Sugoroku, having seen many Duel Monsters cards, glanced into Kaiba’s case and showed a flicker of desire. The case was packed with nearly five hundred cards—a veritable mobile card library!

Hayato stepped forward, curious what cards had made Grandpa Sugoroku so surprised, but after just a glance, he was left speechless. Indeed, the case was full, but the quality of the cards on the first layer alone was low—either meaningless high-level low-stat monsters like "Electro Snail" and "Crashing Beast," or puzzling fusion monsters that wasted resources like "Labyrinth Warrior" and "Thunderous Sea Serpent."
Even the spell cards were mediocre—"Red Potion," "Dreamy Curry," and the like. The only somewhat decent card was a single "Fusion."
So it turned out Kaiba’s collection was just a bunch of weak commoners. He had expected at least some stronger cards like "Sapphire Dragon" or "Emerald Dragon."
"Um, Kaiba, I happen to need a ‘Fusion’ card. How about that?" Hayato interjected, but Kaiba kept his eyes fixed on Sugoroku, seemingly waiting for his answer.
"Sorry, no," Sugoroku said firmly after staring at the entire case for a long time, suppressing his desire.
"If you don’t want to trade, I can buy it with money, no matter the price!" Kaiba, surprised by the refusal but still refusing to give up on obtaining the ‘Blue-Eyes White Dragon,’ pressed on. "Name your price—thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, even millions! I’ll pay if you’re willing to sell!"
Hayato muttered, "I think selling the ‘Blue-Eyes White Dragon’ for 1.5 billion isn’t too much to ask, but then, Chairman, wouldn’t the Kaiba Group be gone?"
