Volume 1, Chapter 24: The Most Lethal Form of Unintentional Showing Off
"Lin Yu, I’d like to see what kind of ability you think you have to be able to say such a thing."
On the open ground, hearing Lin Yu’s incredibly calm tone, Wang Duojin was clearly livid, the fury in his eyes seemingly capable of solidifying into substance. He had logged on specifically to vent his anger, and he never expected that not only would Lin Yu refuse to show him any respect, but he would also put on such a pretentious display of composure. It made his blood boil.
The current scene made it seem as though he were the villain in some novel. Especially seeing Lin Yu’s look of supreme confidence, Wang Duojin felt his rage peaking. *What is this? Do you really think you’re the protagonist of some novel? Are you planning to take on three people at once?*
Gritting his teeth in resentment, Wang Duojin’s gaze toward Lin Yu turned icy. He had to make Lin Yu realize today that he was not someone to be trifled with. *What kind of status do you think you have, trying to act like a protagonist? Do you, a country bumpkin, even deserve it?*
The next moment, he curled his lips into a sneer, looked at the two level-nine knights beside him, and shouted sternly, "You two, go! Teach this bumpkin a lesson and let him know that not everyone has the strength to act like a big shot. If I’m satisfied today, I’ll reward each of you with one hundred thousand!"
As soon as he finished speaking, the two level-nine knights beamed with delight. After exchanging a glance, they did not hesitate in the slightest, charging toward Lin Yu in perfect synchronization, flanking him from the left and right.
The sudden attack caused Lin Xin, who was standing to the side, to frown deeply. Although he knew Lin Yu’s attack power was terrifyingly high, he was facing two opponents after all. Under a pincer attack, even with Lin Yu’s impressive strength, he would likely suffer if he didn’t handle it well. Lin Xin shifted his body, preparing to intervene and distract one of them. Though he was only level eight, as a marksman proficient in "kiting," distracting one person wouldn't be an issue. Even if he couldn't win, as long as Lin Yu took care of one of them, his task would be complete.
However, just as he was about to move, a hand pressed down on his shoulder. Then, he saw Lin Yu step forward alone, facing the onslaught of the two level-nine knights without dodging or retreating.
"You're courting death!" Seeing Lin Yu’s move, a flash of anger crossed the eyes of both knights. They had not expected an eight-level warrior to be so arrogant. Even though they were knights focused on defense and not particularly skilled in attack, they were still level nine. Plus, both of them had half a set of common-grade equipment, bringing their attack power close to 80 points. Even a knight of the same level wouldn't be stupid enough to try and tank that, let alone a warrior like Lin Yu.
"What an idiot. Looks like this guy has read himself stupid, thinking he’s the protagonist just because he’s read a few power-fantasy novels," Wang Duojin mocked, clearly not expecting Lin Yu to pull such a stunt. Knights weren't known for their attack, that was true, but in the early stages of the game when everyone’s stats were low, they still dealt damage.
Lin Yu’s behavior was nothing short of suicide. Did he really think he had some kind of protagonist plot armor?
"Brother Yu!" Lin Xin, equally shocked that Lin Yu would choose to meet them head-on, cried out in concern.
"Is this kid trying too hard to act cool?" Tang Seng Washing Hair Loves to Float, who was hovering in mid-air, was clearly too stunned by the scene to react. Lin Yu had high attack power, sure, but damage mitigation relied on defense. Did he really think he was invincible? This was going to be something to watch.
...
Under the gaze of the crowd, the knights' longswords struck down with fury. Wrapped in sharp, white light, they descended like two white ribbons, aimed directly at Lin Yu.
"Miss!"
"Miss!"
However, just when everyone thought Lin Yu was about to pay the price for his arrogance, those two sharp blade flashes resulted in two "no damage" indicators.
"Miss? How is this possible?"
The scene instantly fell into a deathly silence. No one had expected such an outcome. Two level-nine knights unable to break the defense of a warrior? Was he even a warrior?
"How is this possible?"
The two knights were visibly stunned, looking at Lin Yu in shock as if they had seen a ghost. They knew their attack power was close to 80 points, yet Lin Yu had taken zero damage. This meant his defense had to be over 160!
What did 160 defense points mean? Even they, who focused on defense, didn't have such terrifying stats unless they were knights who had dumped every single attribute point into defense. For Lin Yu to have such defense, he would need to have allocated most of his stats to defense and possess at least one extremely powerful piece of defensive equipment. An eight-level warrior only had 80 attribute points; even if every single one were put into defense, with the warrior’s 1.5 defense multiplier, that would only be 120 points.
"No wonder this guy was so fearless; he had this trump card," Wang Duojin’s expression turned solemn, losing his earlier contempt. Such high defense was a headache even for him to deal with.
Of course, the most shocked were Lin Xin and the others. They had witnessed the terror of Lin Yu’s attack power, and now his defense was equally absurd. Was he even human? If they didn't know that scripts didn't exist in the World of Gods and Demons, they would have been certain Lin Yu was cheating. After all, who would believe these were the stats of an eight-level warrior?
...
"You two keep him occupied; I’ll handle the damage. He must have dumped all his points into defense, which is why you can't break through. Although his defense is impressive, his attack power should be very weak. Just keep him tied down, and I’ll take him out easily," Wang Duojin said, having regained his composure despite being shocked by Lin Yu’s defense.
The two knights nodded in unison. Wang Duojin’s class was marksman, and with his Black-Iron grade weapon and a set of common equipment, his attack power was over 300. As long as they acted as meat shields at the front and let Wang Duojin handle the output, taking down Lin Yu shouldn't be difficult.
Having made their decision, the knights didn't hesitate. They lunged forward again, wielding their standard longswords toward Lin Yu. Behind them, Wang Duojin pulled back his bowstring, ready to fire at any moment. As soon as Lin Yu was pinned by the pair, he would unleash a cold arrow.
"Lin Yu, you really think your turtle shell is useful? In the face of absolute strength, you’re nothing but a clown..." Wang Duojin sneered at Lin Yu, filled with disdain. Even though Lin Yu's defense was shocking and regular players at the same stage couldn't handle it, there were still such things as "pay-to-win" whales in the game. The thought of Lin Yu wanting to resist but being powerless to do so brought him immense satisfaction. *You want to be the protagonist? Do you even deserve it?*
However, facing Wang Duojin’s self-righteous plan, Lin Yu simply curled his lips. He clenched his palm, and a golden longsword instantly appeared in his hand. The next moment, he swung the blade, slicing cleanly toward the two approaching knights.
"Putting on a show..." one of the knights sneered, seeing Lin Yu dare to take the initiative.
However, before he could finish his sentence, the smile on his face froze solid. A terrifying damage value appeared above his head.
"-472!"
